July is known for many things—perfect weather, food festivals, and countless outdoor activities. The fact that July also happens to be National Ice Cream Month puts the cherry on top of this extra sweet (horrible pun intended) month. Here at Ethnic Seattle we thought, ‘what better way to celebrate than highlighting our favorite minority, women, and people of color (POC)-owned businesses?’ So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We are featuring at least two great local ice cream spots everyday—up until National Ice Cream Day on July 16—so that you can celebrate right.

Poké shops serving the popular Hawaiian raw fish salad have been popping up all over Seattle, but goPoké in the Chinatown-International District  has a few delicious reasons above the rest for you to step inside and check them out this summer. Vietnamese brothers Bayley, Michael, and Trinh Le bring tangy island flavors from Hawaii to Seattle with Dole Whip pineapple soft serve ice cream sprinkled with li hing mui (salty dried plum) powder. This combination of tropical flavors will transport you to the breezy, beautiful islands in no time. With shaved ice and Bubbies homemade mochi ice cream also on the dessert menu, goPoké is a must-go-to!

Try the: Dole Whip Float (pineapple soft serve, pineapple juice, pineapple bits and li hing mui).

Hours/Locations: Open 11am-8pm every day of the week. Located right across from the newly renovated and opened Hing Hay Park at 625 S. King St. in the Chinatown-International District.

BAMBU Desserts & Drinks

Fresh fruity flavors abound just a few blocks away from goPoké at Bambu Dessert & Drinks. The Seattle location opened in March 2016 and is part of a popular Californian business founded by four Vietnamese sisters in 2008. The shop boasts an extensive menu of over 80 specialty drinks and desserts from ché (Vietnamese dessert drinks) to fresh juices to snow ice, all made with ingredients that are prepared fresh daily. If all the options don’t satisfy your craving, you can also build your own desserts and personalize sweetness levels to your liking. Bambu is a great place to post up with friends or for work, as they have free wifi, comfy couches, board games and are always playing great music.

Try the: #1 Bambu Special (coconut, pandan jelly, longan, basil seed and coconut juice) and the #10 Bambu Favorite (red tapioca, grass jelly, pandan jelly and coconut milk).

Hours/Locations: Open from 11am-11pm Sunday-Thursday, and til midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Find them in the Chinatown-International District at 516 7th Ave S. If you’re worried about finding parking in the C-ID, try calling in for convenient curbside pick-up, available Monday-Friday, 2-6pm.
